"You do you, I'll do me."

Embracing the idea of "I have a right to myself" becomes most apparent when a player's self-focus is suboptimal for peak performance.

Athletes should neither deny themselves, conform to expectations nor solely focus on others. However, they should also avoid the temptation to prioritize their own voice without considering its impact by simply saying, "You do you, I'll do me."

Shifting focus begins with recognizing your uniqueness. Understanding what sets them apart allows athletes to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their interactions with others. This shift in focus is not the ultimate goal; it's just the first step in their journey to achieving peak performance.

Imagine truly seeing yourself as you are—not just your physical, cognitive, or emotional self, but your inner self—your spirit—the "I" within you.

This is the essence of character development. Through the character matrix, a coach, parent, or athlete can navigate the sports experience with a structured and clear pathway for character development.

Character development is not simply about becoming better in what is seen on the outside. It is about the alignment between your body, mind, and heart. Only then can you achieve peak performance.
